Web design packages vary because there’s no ‘one size fits all’ solution that will work for every customer.
Web designers aren’t all the same, and as clients you aren’t all the same either so creating standardised web design packages isn’t realistic. If we did, some clients would end up paying too much, and others not nearly enough. We prefer to get things ‘just right’.
However, we do provide web design packages of sorts based on the common things that we know SME business owners need as part of their overall web design and marketing support package. Some businesses may have a number of these elements in place already, therefore if you don’t need it, you don’t have to pay for it – it’s that simple.
What Do Web Design Packages for SMEs Need to Include?
There are many things SME business owners need as standard to get their website up and running, and working to achieve their goals. Don’t be fooled into thinking there isn’t much to it – in reality your website is a huge part of your digital marketing strategy. It’s not only a fairly large project, but an ongoing one too so its costs don’t have a cut-off point where they are all paid (sorry – we realise that’s probably not what you want to hear!). Some costs will be monthly, and others quarterly or annual fees. Not all web designers are upfront about the real costs of a web design project, but we prefer to let you know what you’re getting into, and what you will get in return for your hard-earned money from the start!
To help SME business owners understand what’s really involved in planning a web design budget for your new website, we’ve included various web design packages and outlined the elements of each one. These include:
Set-up & Maintenance Package
These sorts of packages are billed annually and their elements often grouped together into a one-off set-up and maintenance package which covers all of these aspects.
Website domain: you/we need to purchase a website domain [e.g. www.companyname.location] to create your website and company email accounts. Domains can be purchased for 1 year or for a number of years and must be renewed or someone else could purchase your domain and build a website on it!
Website hosting: an annual fee to pay for the storage space that your website takes up on the World Wide Web.
Website security: an annual fee to cover the costs of installing security packages, undertaking manual checks of your website and implementing security updates to protect your site from hackers.
Website maintenance: a fee to cover the support time required for your web designer to make any minor updates to your site’s design and content throughout the year.
Website Strategy Package
Audit and research: an audit of your existing website to identify problematic issues that need corrected, and/or to identify features your website needs to include to enable you to meet the needs of your target customers.
Strategy development: once the research is complete your website strategy will be developed based on the observations and recommendations.
Website specification and sitemap: the specification document and sitemap are the practical outputs of the strategy which detail the specifics of the build and the layout/navigation of the site. This needs to be approved before design and build work can commence.
Website Branding Strategy
If you are a new company or need to re-brand you will also have to factor in your website’s branding strategy. Your branding package may include some or all of the following elements:
1. Logo & brand guidelines (the specific colours that can be used and how the logo can be used in marketing material).
2. Social media logos and images for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or any other social channels you use.
3. Email marketing templates to match your website and brand guidelines.
*Note that the branding strategy needs to be integrated with your offline branding too. This may include materials such as business cards, letterhead, compliments slips, branded envelopes, product packaging and labels, pull-up stands and other exhibition graphics, branded merchandise, clothing, vehicle graphics and much more. We don’t just do web design and can deliver all of this for you as well. Get in touch to find out more.
Web Design & Build Package
This will be priced based on the requirements identified within the strategy and specification documents. The greater your needs, the greater your costs and the delivery timeframe. For example a site that requires transactional and/or online booking facilities will be more costly and time consuming to build than a static brochure website.
Website Content Package
Producing relevant, engaging and search friendly copy is one of the biggest stumbling blocks which holds up the completion of a website project. If you need support in this area, we can provide a website content package for SMEs (or any size of business) which will include copywriting, design and media support for graphics and video content.
Website SEO Package
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) refers to your website’s ability to rank in search engines such as Google for keywords and phrases used by your customers online in search queries. The quality of the web design and coding can impact significantly on SEO. A word of warning – be sure to ask any web designer you are considering engaging to explain in detail the measures they would put in place to address SEO at the design stage. We will build your website in line with SEO best practice requirements, and can also provide an SEO support package to optimise the content on your site to maximise your chances of being found by potential customers online.
Website Marketing Package
Once your website is live, you will need to put it to the test to see how effective it is in supporting you to meet your website goals. This means that we will have to develop and deliver regular marketing campaigns and make continuous improvements to the site based on the campaign results to ensure your website is fit for purpose.
Website Reporting Package
Regular performance analysis is crucial to determine how successful your website is in meeting your goals. Your website package should include a reporting package, the cost of which will be dictated by the frequency of reporting (i.e. monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly) and the depth of analysis carried out. An in-depth analysis will enable us to identify impactful recommendations for improvement which will increase the effectiveness of your website upon implementation.
As you can now see, website packages for SMEs and any business are complex and made up of many elements. Your web designer may provide all of these for you, or your overall website package may be delivered by a number of parties including your in-house team, your web design team, and other digital marketing and online PR teams.
